This Privacy Policy explains how WordWriter (“we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, stores, and shares information in connection with the WordWriter Research Clipper browser extension (the “Extension”).

The Extension helps users save webpage citations, metadata, and selected excerpts directly into their WordWriter books.

1. Scope

This Privacy Policy applies only to the WordWriter Research Clipper browser extension and information collected or processed through that extension.

It does not apply to other WordWriter products, websites, or services except to the extent needed to authenticate users, retrieve books, or save clipped content through a connected WordWriter account.

2. Information We Collect

When you use the Extension, we may collect and process the following information from the webpage you choose to clip:

  • page title
  • page URL
  • author name, if available
  • publication date or year, if available
  • text you explicitly select on the page
  • citation-related metadata needed to save the source to WordWriter

We may also collect and process:

  • account and session information needed to determine whether you are signed in to WordWriter
  • information needed to retrieve your books and save content to your selected book
  • extension preference data, such as your last selected book
  • technical and diagnostic information necessary to operate, secure, and improve the Extension

3. When Information Is Collected

The Extension only accesses webpage information when you actively use it, such as when you:

  • click the extension icon
  • use the “Clip to WordWriter” right-click menu option
  • choose to save a citation or excerpt
  • choose to use the AI Summarise feature

The Extension is not intended to continuously monitor your browsing activity.

4. How We Use Information

We use information collected through the Extension only to provide and support its core functionality, including to:

  • save webpage citations to your WordWriter book
  • attach selected excerpts or quotes to saved citations
  • retrieve your available books
  • remember your last-used book and similar preferences
  • authenticate your WordWriter session
  • generate summaries when you request the AI Summarise feature
  • maintain security, prevent abuse, and troubleshoot issues
  • improve the Extension’s functionality and reliability

5. AI Summaries

If you use the AI Summarise feature, the text you choose to summarize may be sent to WordWriter or to a service provider acting on our behalf for the sole purpose of generating the summary you request.

We do not use this text for personalized advertising.

6. Browser Storage

The Extension may store limited information locally in your browser, such as:

  • your last selected book
  • sign-in or session-related state
  • basic extension preferences

This information is used to make the Extension function properly and improve usability.

7. How We Share Information

We may share information collected through the Extension only as necessary to operate the Extension and provide its features, including:

  • with WordWriter systems and infrastructure, to authenticate users, retrieve books, and save citations and excerpts
  • with service providers that support hosting, storage, authentication, security, or AI summarization
  • when required by law, regulation, legal process, or enforceable governmental request
  • when necessary to protect the rights, security, and integrity of WordWriter, our users, or others
  • in connection with a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of all or part of our business, where permitted by law

8. What We Do Not Do

We do not sell personal information collected through the Extension.

We do not use information collected through the Extension for personalized advertising, retargeting, or interest-based advertising.

We do not collect webpage content unless you take an action to use the Extension on that page.

9. Data Retention

We retain information collected through the Extension only for as long as reasonably necessary to:

  • provide the Extension and related WordWriter features
  • maintain your account and saved citations
  • comply with legal obligations
  • resolve disputes
  • enforce our agreements
  • prevent fraud and abuse

Retention periods may vary depending on the type of information and the purpose for which it was collected.

10. Data Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards to protect information handled through the Extension.

However, no method of electronic transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

11. Your Choices

You control when the Extension accesses webpage information by choosing when to activate it.

You may stop further collection through the Extension at any time by disabling or uninstalling it.

The Extension is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 through the Extension.
